BREAKING THE SILENCE CAMPAIGN

The campaign is aimed at protecting and promoting sexuality and sexual rights among LGBTI community in Kenya.

Campaign managed by: BENA
Campaign location: Kenya

I started the Breaking silence campaign 2 years ago (2008) to help address the enormous challenges that faced the Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people in particular youth in our society and help to highlight systematic human rights violation perpetuated towards them after watching in pain as young people who were perceived or actual LGBT were subjected to untold suffering from the society. I am mindful that sexual minorities (LGBT) continue to face social, economic and political exclusion in the face of horrifying extreme homophobia in developing countries like Kenya in the disguise of tradition and religious beliefs putting them at greater risk of poverty, disease, violence and homelessness. If we don’t raise our voices against these heinous selfish acts of human degradation, we knowingly allow perpetual oppression of LGBT individuals who have a right to be protected by law for them to exercise their sexuality and sexual rights without fear of repression thus participating in socio-economic and political development of our society freely.
I must admit that during this period, the campaign has not been that easy considering the fact that no body wants to hear or talk about the matter LGBT leave a lone contributing towards the course and hostile resistance from all corners. But so far I have recorded significant achievement including setting up of small LGBTI information resource centres, rescued a number of perceived LGBT, organized several HIV/AIDS testing for LGBT members. My campaign has adopted strategies such training, lobbying, workshops and writing petitions.
