UK train fares are the highest in Europe and they're pricing people off the railways. People keep telling us they're being pushed back into cars and planes, when they'd rather take the train.

Cheaper train fares could be paid for with a fuel tax on domestic flights. This would cut carbon emissions by making it easier for people to go green.

Have you considered setting up a petition on the number 10 website?

Hi Sam

Thanks for the idea - we'll have a think about it.

It could be the kind of thing that lots of people would sign up to.

In general, we've avoided doing number 10 petitions as the Government seems to ignore them, and it is very difficult to get more than the 1.7 million people who signed up against road pricing.
