Hands Up For Health Workers

Hands Up For Health Workers is a campaign led by medical aid agency Merlin to make investment in health workers in crisis countries a global priority.

Campaign managed by: Handsupforhealthworkers
Campaign location: International

In countries like Afghanistan, Haiti and Democratic Republic of Congo, where more people die from easily preventable diseases than anywhere else on earth, health workers face immeasurable challenges, working often unpaid, in dangerous conditions, with poor or non-existent equipment. Yet they soldier on.
If you agree it makes sense for aid to be directed to those who need it most, we would ask you to add your name to our petition and put your hand up for a health worker.
This is a huge year for change. In September, anyone who’s anyone will be meeting in New York to assess what needs to be done on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
We plan to take every signature to the UN General Assembly in New York to persuade global leaders that long-term investment in health workers in crisis countries is the surest route to meeting the health-related MDGs, like reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV/ AIDS and malaria.

Campaign goals
  1. To secure 10,000 signatures before the UN General Assembly in September.
  2. To increase the number of health workers in crisis countries from less than one for every 1,000 people to 2.3 per 1,000, the minimum the World Health Organisation (WHO)states is necessary to deliver basic care.
  3. To help meet the Millennium Development Goals to reduce child mortality, improve maternal health and combat HIV/AIDS and malaria by training and funding health workers in crisis countries.
