High Street Hijack

a competition for non-profit organisations to win free use of an empty shop and £1500 to facilitate a pop-up project

Campaign managed by: 3Space
Categories: environment

Empty shops blight our high streets, charities’ funding is being cut and community centres are closing. 3Space are giving charitable organisations a chance to help turn this around by ‘hijacking’ an empty retail unit for a pop-up project. 3Space are delighted to announce ‘High Street Hijack’, a competition to reward charitable organisations who can come up with innovative and creative ideas for how they can temporarily occupy these vacant spaces.

Not only will the winning project get free use of an empty retail unit, but will also receive up to £1,500 to facilitate a project that is both memorable and will also provide a real benefit to the surrounding community as well as their organisation. Entrants have the chance to choose from a list of 25 properties based across the UK, each of which can be seen in more detail at http://3space.org/properties

3Space are looking for applications from all non-profit organisations who can come up with an exciting and original idea which they’ll be able to get off the ground. Past projects have included art and design galleries, drop-in centres, information hubs and community workshops. More examples of previous projects which have taken place in our spaces can be found on our website at http://3space.org

Andrew Cribb, Director of 3Space says: “Lots of questions are being asked about what can be done about our struggling high streets and town centres, specifically in regards to empty shops. Social organisations are integral to this solution - they need the rich community interaction that can't be found on line or in supermarkets. It's exciting to think that High Street Hijack could provide us with the first glimpse of the town centre experience of the future.”

To be eligible, entrants must be a registered charity, social enterprise or non-profit organisation based in the UK. Entries must be submitted by 10th November 2011, when judges will select the top 5 entries. The winner will then be decided by a public vote between 23rd-30th November. Projects will be judged on their originality and creativity, their reach and benefit, and their potential for community involvement. The winner will be announced on 1st December 2011.

Terms and Conditions of the competition and an online entry form can be found at http://highstreethijack.org

Finalists announced!

Having received a staggering number of entries from non-profit organisations across the UK, 3Space are excited to announce the shortlisted organisations in the running to become the winner of High Street Hijack! Chosen by a panel of regeneration, retail and third-sector experts, the top 5 entries now facing a public vote via the 3Space Facebook page are:

Tutti Music - a Manchester-based organisation planning to stage a series of unique pop-up music workshops, for example ‘Choral Quickies’ - a choir formed in a lunch-break, giving local residents the opportunity to sing and make new music together, supported by some of the city’s best musicians and workshops leaders.
Stitched Up - an organisation who plan to raise awareness of upcycling and ethical fashion through a series of community workshops and events staged in Manchester during London Fashion Week. Planned workshops include a Sustainable Fashion Show and ‘Sweat Shop’ - a race to make a t-shirt in 10 minutes to highlight fashion ethics.
Petit Miracle - a London-based charity whose innovative ‘Design Bank’ project involves upcycling workshops for both the public and disadvantaged groups, where participants earn credits which can then be used to purchase items from the project.
Mercurial Dance - who plan to stage a series of taster dance workshops for the community as part of their larger public project ‘The Bubble Chamber’ in Coventry, celebrating urban space through dance.
Rhythmix - a youth music charity working in South East England, who plan to hold music workshops, and free public performances, providing a free event for the community and giving young people a chance to shine by showcasing their talents in a safe environment.

The overall winner of High Street Hijack will be decided by a public vote via the 3Space Facebook page, at http://www.facebook.com/3space - voting closes at 12pm on Thursday 1st December. Full details of the shortlisted projects can be seen on the 3Space website at http://3space.org/competition/shortlist
